There are two things that have always decided if I am going to read a book or not. 1) The "about" this book has to catch my eye and not cause me to drift off while trying to read it and 2) I want it to grab me from page one - even though I have always found a slow starting book almost always ends up being a GREAT book. Red Mane's "about" was slow and it started off even slower, but the book had such great reviews, I decided to read it. Boy am I glad I did...most assuredly one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was so drawn in to Charlotte, her family and her friends that I wanted to see how the book ended, but I didn't want the book to end!!! I laughed, I cried, I got frustrated, I wanted to hit stuff and dance around. This book and this author really draw you into this time, era, and Charlotte. I highly recommend you read this book and I can't wait to read the 2nd book. Very well written - and it has it all, love, suspense, twists and turns!!!

Red Mane The Red Mane Chronicles A PreCivil War Romance Book 1 eBook Deborah CaldwellWright Danijela Mijailovic Reviews

I liked the story but the ending was a disappointment, will not be reading the books that follow.
There is absolutely nothing I dislike more in any book than to finish it only to realize.......ITS A CLIFF-hanger! You must buy the next to see how the first one ends. Sorry, that's a sucker punch and I hate it. Too bad as the story didn't suck. Just the tactic.
Wanted to like this, but it was frankly awful. The writing itself wasn't bad, but the concept... Hard to believe this is a series and people actually would pay for the next installments.
Enjoyed every page of this story within a story. It has romance, excitement, suspense and adventure. . This author is great at keeping the story from being boring and best of all, left the ending open for future installments. I am so happy about the possibility of future aqdventures. Great book.
Enjoyable wholesome read. Makes a reader wonder how many books are to follow. I'm not a fan of trying to keep up with the same story continued books. It has become a thing with many authors nowadays. This book kept my interest. I enjoyed it. I hope it doesn't turn into a once or twice a year follow up series. Huge turn off for me.
On my top 3 worst books I've ever read. If the author is 12 or under I'd say good job, but this is a stinker. One review compared it to Outlander. Using lines like "dinna fash" and "hallo the house" does not Outlander make.
I'm glad I didn't pay for this extremely poorly written book.
So I'm reading along in the book, which is a little naive historically but didn't have anything blatantly impossible when...
we are introduced to the main character's grandmother
who speaks
ENTIRELY
in Cockney Rhyming Slang.
Used incorrectly.
It was not a dialect, it was a few words thrown in occasionally, with the actual rhyming word almost always omitted. And depending on when Grandmother Abigail emigrated from London, it may not even have been invented yet? The bits of Scots dialect thrown into the Cockney garble make it even more weird.
She breaks her hip and is still talking entirely in Cockney Rhyming slang, making her sentences twice as long. As one does?
I just don't even know what else to say here. If the author was so enthusiastic about using it, she could have at least learned how to use it correctly and if not, why on earth vomit it profusely into a character's dialogue to the point where she has to provide translations for each sentence? Why?
Haven't finished the book yet. Since the Grandmother appears to be dying and leaving her linguistic misery behind for a kinder place, I'll probably keep reading and see if it gets better, but this is not the best writing. Things like all the girls at the teachers' school (which from what I understand is a charity organization that they are not paying to attend) getting custom made silk ballgowns seem beyond unlikely. Her family is "sheltering" a runaway slave by making him their slave, which is, I guess, nice of them? Unless he actually wanted to be free.
Whatever. I'll forge on to the end of this and add to the review if there's anything that I just have to say something about.
